Popular culture as a reflection of political agenda: Scottish separatism in series “Outlander”

The present article deals with phenomenon of popular culture as it interacts with a political agenda. Scottish separatism is the subject of research. The basis of interpretation is the separatism in Diana Gabaldon`s series of novels “Outlander” and their screen adaptation of the same name. The advertising campaign, video and discourse of the storyline are analysed. The conclusion is drawn that their emotional prowess lies wholly in the plot. Furthermore, the author draws conclusions about the aspects that construct a positive image of the Scottish highlander and ideas of separatism. Refs 31. Figs 4.
